Ramondin confirms leadership in Second Corporate Social Responsibility Ranking in Spanish wine industry

  • The report offers an overall ranking (for wineries, distributors and suppliers) and a classification by sectors. In the overall ranking, the firm comes in in second place, after El Corte Inglés.
  • The poll was carried out among 1,000 companies by the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria (Madrid).

Ramondin again ranked second in the wine industry's second Corporate Social Responsibility Survey among wineries, distributors and suppliers. Mercados del Vino y la Distribución and the Universidad Francisco de Vitoria sent a questionnaire to over 1,000 wine industry businesses.

In the general category, Ramondin came in second behind the El Corte Inglés retail chain. It is followed by major companies, including Eroski, Bodegas Torres and Pernod-Ricard Group. In the wine industry supplier category, Ramondin ranked first, followed by Vidrala and Estal Packaging.

This recognition comes on the wake of the recent AENOR SR10 Social Responsibility certification —a recognition of its strategic commitment to Social Responsibility—. Ramondin is the first company in the winery supply industry to earn this certification.

"We can certainly congratulate ourselves in 2015. While we are celebrating our 125 year history, we have achieved the excellent results the 2nd CSR Ranking and earned AENOR-IQNet certification. At Ramondin we are aware that our strategic commitment to CSR strengthens our position on international markets while helping create a positive difference that our clients greatly value," said José Miguel Munilla, CEO, Ramondin.

Munilla added that, "Only a committed, responsible and respectful company can last over time. That is why today, more than ever, we have the tremendous responsibility of turning our 125 years of existence into just a beginning."

Ramondin receives IQNet SR10 Social Responsibility certification from AENOR at the first official event celebrating the firm's 125th anniversary

  • Only about 50 companies around the world have this certification —30 of them in Spain and 3 in the Basque Country.

  • The ceremony was held in Laguardia, where the firm's headquarters are located. Assistants included Yolanda Beldarrain, Director-General Risk Capital Management, Basque Government; Luz Emparanza, AENOR Director in the Basque Country; Ana Teresa Echeverría, Chair of the Board of Directors, Ramondin and José Miguel Munilla, CEO, Ramondin.

The Director of AENOR in the Basque Country, Luz Emparanza, accompanied by Yolanda Beldarrain, Director-General Risk Capital Management, Basque Government, gave Ramondin the SR10 IQNet certification that recognizes the work of the company in the field of Social Responsibility. José Miguel Munilla, CEO, Ramondin and Ana Teresa Echeverría, Chair of the Board of Directors participated in the event.

José Miguel Munilla underscored that this certification recognizes the work done by Ramondin over the past years. "It's an important day for the more than 600 employees who are part of Ramondin because it recognizes our efforts to make turn Ramondin into a responsible company. The more than 18,000 companies producing wines, spirits and champagne that place their trust on us do so for the quality of our products and our service warranty —but also because they know our environmental protection, exemplary employee policy, transparency and ethical behavior and contribution to our surrounding community."

"Our commitment to innovation, investment and internationalization —the keys to our success— are based on a deeply rooted philosophy and strong company values that have allowed our growth and our existence for more than a century and, we trust, for many years o come," added Munilla.

For her part, Luz Emparanza, Director of AENOR in the Basque Country, reviewed Ramondin's history and certifications: quality certification in 1995; commitment to the environment in 2002; and occupational health and safety in 2007. Emparanza highlighted that all these certifications share the same characteristic —they are voluntary. "Certification means that an organization voluntarily submits to an independent third party review. It is a commitment and a requirement that the company sets upon itself. This is firmly rooted in Ramondin's philosophy and strategy."

In her speech, Yolanda Beldarrain, Director-General Risk Capital Management congratulated the Ramondin team on behalf of the Basque Government and noted that this certificate follows along the lines that the Basque Government is promoting: "We want to associate the commitment to CSR in private sector companies with the commitment of the Government to new management systems that are more competitive and accountable."

Anniversary: 125 years of history

"Only a committed, responsible and respectful company can last over time. Today more than ever we should feel proud of being part of a company that pampers its employees, looks after each and every individual who is part of its surroundings and remains faithful to unwavering principles. But today also, more than ever, we have the tremendous responsibility of turning our 125 years of existence into just a beginning." With these words, Ana Teresa Echeverría, Chair of the Board of Directors of Ramondin recalled that the certification ceremony coincides with the beginning of the celebrations of the 125th anniversary of the firm, founded by Frédéric Dehillotte Ramondin in Ibarra (Tolosa) in 1890.

The firm moved to Logroño, capital of La Rioja, in 1972. In 1999, it built modern facilities in a new plot located in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa. Today, Grupo Ramondin has over 600 employees at its plants in Laguardia (group headquarters), France and Argentina. Currently, Ramondin produces several types of capsules —made of tin (its star product), polylaminate and PVC— as well as screw caps. It recently added wire hoods for cavas and other sparkling wines to its production.

Rioja Sommeliers in Ramondin

  • The Cultural Association of Rioja Sommeliers visited Ramondin to learn about the world of capsules the various materials used, the properties of each and the manufacturing processes.
  • The meeting was accompanied by a tasting of New World wines.

With the aim of bringing the world of capsules to different sectors, Ramondin invited the Cultural Association of Rioja Sommeliers to visit its facilities and learn about the production processes involved in the production of capsules for oils, liquors, wines, sparkling wines, etc. After a short briefing in which the history and the properties of each material were reviewed, the 15 members of the Association visited the plant to learn about the benefits of each product.

The meeting ended with a tasting of wines from the new world, directed by Carlos Echapresto, President of the Association. Among the wines selected for the tasting, the Sommeliers were able to see from capsules made of tin, the top-range materialised for premium wines, to screw caps used for white and young wines. They also had the opportunity to discover other products manufactured by the firm, such as aluminium and polylaminate capsules and the wire hoods or wire cages used for Champagne, Cava and other sparkling wines.

The goal of the visit —to be repeated with other associations and in Ramondin's various branch offices— is to enrich sommeliers' knowledge of a product with which they are in permanent contact every day.
